Spending the weekend in Santa Monica, California is always fun… and a quick getaway from San Diego. With my beach cruiser and backpack ready to go, I headed out really early one morning to beat the crowds and find a cool lifeguard tower on an empty beach to photograph. June gloom was in full effect so I wasn’t sure if I was going to get a break in the clouds. I found this great tower and set up my composition to get the right amount of beach, ocean and sky… plus a little bit of the Santa Monica Mountains in the background. Using an 8-minute exposure, I waited for a small break in the clouds to start my time-lapse and get some color reflecting in the fog. My timing was perfect as the sun reflected shades of pink across the clouded bank and the “Overcast” skies delivered a surreal image.
