Photographing the ocean in the early morning hours on the west coast is always special since the sun rises in the east and sends perfect light towards your subject... and on this morning that would be this reef formation. I'd been waiting for the right tide and Santa Ana conditions to capture a minimalistic image of this reef with the right glow from the morning sun for a while. Winter is the best time for the Santa Ana winds to blow in from the desert and create these spectacular sunrises... and also the fine, crisp horizon line in the distance. I only had a couple of exposures to get my shot right since the sun was behind the sea cliffs only for a short period of time before casting shadows into my frame. The soft light with the glow of the morning sun really set the mood for this image and was everything I had waited for.
